Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare – review

4 out of 5 stars

CASSANDRA CLARE IS A HEARTBREAKER PASS IT ON
Okay. Wow. This book was painful. Beautiful and funny, but painful. Cassandra writes such gorgeous relationships; the one character that really took my breath away was Julian, and it was NOT because of his muscles (but they’re the cherry on top, ya know what I mean?).
Okay, so I knew Julian loves his family before I went into this. But fuck me, he lies and schemes and does WHATEVER he has to in order to keep his family safe and together. He has such a brilliant mind, and it wasn’t something that we got to see in Lady Midnight. For me, this is Julian’s book. He loves Emma, god, him and Emma are beautiful together, but he does not spend the entire time that she’s with Mark pining over her. Julian believes that Mark makes Emma happy, and so, while it hurts him, he accepts it.
”His Emma, his universe, his blade.”
You could say that I am complete trash for Julian Blackthorn. You would be 100% correct.
“That is love, son of thorns. We welcome its cruelest blows and when we bleed from them, we whisper our thanks.”
The rest of the Blackthorns also find out about how much Julian has been doing for him over the years, what with running the institute behind his uncle’s name. And their gratitude, their acceptance and their love for their older brother had me choked up on more than one occasion.
“People say we’re unlucky because we don’t have parents. But I think they’re unlucky because they don’t have a brother like mine.”
IF I COULD BOLD THAT QUOTE EVEN BOLDER THAN BOLD THEN I WOULD BECAUSE MY HEART I
Emma is as witty and brilliant as ever. She keeps up her ‘relationship’ with Mark even when she thinks Julian hates her, and I just think that that is so selfless…or maybe I’m just selfish.
I went into this book loving the Emma and Julian ship. Now, you might as well call me captain jack sparrow because I am the fucking caPTAIN OF THIS SHIP
I also now have a smidgen of hope for Emma and Julian now. Things are revealed, plans are thrashed out.
Okay, I also want to talk about Kit Herondale. I didn’t like Kit in Lady Midnight, but now I fucking love him. He finally accepts his heritage and YES YOU OWN THAT HERONDALE SASS YES YES YE
“When he says ‘Blackthorn blood’, there isn’t any chance he just means, like, an ounce?” Said Kit. “Maybe a pint?”
Another thing that should be mentioned is that we return to the London institute!! We have TID references! You know what that means?!
PAIN!!
PAIN!!
MORE EFFING PAIN!!
“I don’t know what comes after death.” Jessamine said. “Tessa used to come and ask me too. She wanted to know where Will was. But he didn’t linger – he died happy and at peace, and he went on.”
How rude, Cassandra. How fucking rude of you to hurt me this way.
And that ending, god. This book is long, but it’s beautiful and captivating and thrilling. And it will make you cry. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
