Renegades by Marissa Meyer – Review

Rating – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Action packed, funny, gripping…why do I need to wait till 2018 for the next one?!

After watching a man kill her family during the Age of Anarchy, Nova has sworn to bring around the end of the Renegades, a group of superheroes who failed her family. After a failed assassination attempt on the Renegades’ leader, Nova finally sees her chance; trials are being held to find new Renegades. Nova needs to monitor her every word, every action, so as to not bring the Renegades down on her. And all the while the heroes are furiously searching for her villain persona, Nightmare.

This story is told in dual POVs; Nova, the villain, and Adrian, the hero. I loved both of their chapters equally, and never found myself wishing for the other character to come back.

I also liked how Nova didn’t suddenly have A Moment where she sees the light and switches sides. Sure, she has her doubts every now and then, but it’s a gradual thing, and you can truly tell how much she’s struggling between loyalty to her family and growing feelings for her Renegades team members.

While there isn’t any romance in this book, it is set up nicely for book two, and I do have high hopes for Nova and Adrian!

I HAVE TWO COMPLAINTS! They’re very minor complaints, but I do have to mention them.

1. every time someone said Adrian’s name, I kept shouting it in my head like Rocky
2. I couldn’t link up people’s normal names to their superhero names. I obviously knew Nova and Adrian (ADRIAAAN!) and their team, but the council? Count me out. I have no idea who is saying what.

I’m so pleased I got to read this book, it’s such fun! Both the characters and their world are beautifully three dimensional, and Marissa’s writing is beautiful.

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read this book*
