The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – Review

Rating – ⭐️⭐️

My feelings for this book can be summed up in a single symbol. That symbol would be:

What’s really confusing me is the fact that while I was counting down the pages until I finished the book, the writing was so enchanting. I had no idea what the fuck was going on, but the writing and the world drew me in completely and utterly.
(Apart from the last 30 odd pages. I was bloody sick of it by that point.)
Before going into The Night Circus, I saw comparisons to Caraval. And, call me uncultured and a heathen (I’m both of those things, to be honest), but I much preferred Caraval.
To really put into perspective how confused this book made me, I spent a good 20% of the book thinking that Isobel (a side character) was Celia (the main character). It was only until they sat together in a cafe that I actually realised they’re two different people.

One thing that I feel needs mentioning is how misleading the synopsis is. After reading the synopsis, I was expecting a grand battle full of magic and romance. But…it wasn’t. It was so freaking slow I literally can’t believe it. The duel was…I’m so fucking confused as to what the duel was. Making new tents? Bonfires? Wishing trees? Are those things classed as the duels? what the fuck is going on?

I have no idea. I don’t even know what I’ve just read. I feel like I was viewing these characters through a foggy glass, like I was separate from them, couldn’t really see them properly, and didn’t really know what was going on.

Have you read this book?! What did you think of it? Were you as confused as I am?
